Volunteering

Have you ever wanted to make a difference but time was an issue? At the animal shelters, there are opportunities to volunteer in many different ways.
I've volunteered for 4 hours every Monday afternoon at the Orange County FL Animal Services since August 2009.  There are many reasons why dogs  end up in the shelter. Some times a family may have financial, health, or changes in employment as some of the issues that cause dogs to be given to the shelters. In a few instances there may be something about the dog that has to be taken into consideration. High energy dogs need more excercise, dogs that were bred as a working animal need something to do that fulfills their breeding.

When I first began, it was difficult as I wanted to bring every dog home with me. But as time went on, I noticed, it was by far a people problem. Not really dog problems. It usually starts with people not understanding dogs, and being inhumane to animals. Now I look forward to the difference I make for each dog, when exercising them and showing them to prospective adoption owners. Which in turn, training people about their dog makes a difference for the whole relationship.

As a Dog Trainer, I give the dog training when they are fearful to give them more of a chance of adoption.

Volunteer Highlight at OCAS for December 2010:
                                Heather S.
.

A lady told me that she had
lost her dog 3 years ago and
would not give up on finding it.
She came to me with her form,
signed by the front desk to
take out what she thought was
her dog after 3 years of not
seeing it. She would know if it
was hers as it had a mark on
its testicle. So we took the dog
out and turned him upside down
and yes the mark was there.
She cried so much with
happiness and so did I..

Heather is an outstanding
volunteer and also helps Patsy with volunteer orientations!
